Charles John Huffam Dickens, born on the 7th February 1812 in Portsmouth, is one of the most celebrated and influential writers of the Victorian era. Best known for A Christmas Carol, his vivid characters, intricate plots, and sharp social commentary, Dickens brought to life the struggles of the poor and working class in 19th-century England. His own experiences with poverty, particularly during his childhood when his father was taken to a debtor's prison and Charles at the age of 12 had to work at Warren's Blacking factory placing labels on bottles, deeply influenced his writing, which often highlighted the harsh realities of industrialisation, class disparity, and injustice. Charles became a journalist and spend a lot of his evenings on his own writing and The Pickwick Papers was published in 1836. Dickens is most famous for novels such as Oliver Twist, Bleak House, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens is known for popularising Christmas through his works and emphasising the importance of charity and kindness even more so during the festive season.
Dickens' ability to create memorable, larger-than-life characters, from the tragic to the comedic, and his skill at weaving complex, yet accessible narratives made him a beloved figure in literature. His novels continue to resonate with readers around the world, offering both entertainment and a timeless critique of societal issues.
