Anne of Green Gables: Romanticising Autumn

Hi, I’m Lottie, a book-loving former English teacher who now tutors part time. At Shelfaware, I spend my days designing and crafting thoughtful book-themed gifts inspired by the stories I adore. My hope is that each piece brings a little more joy and magic to your reading ritual.

Falling into Avonlea: Autumn Days and Anne Dreams

Anne of Green Gables Autumn Gift Box - Shelfaware

I’m totally that autumn book girlie who waits all year for the crunch of leaves underfoot, mugs of tea, and the sweet smell of cinnamon in the air, and Anne of Green Gables is my fall spirit guide. Anne Shirley’s world at Green Gables is as warm and nostalgia-filled as my pumpkin scented wax melts. I’ve read it countless times, and each autumn I’m drawn back to Avonlea’s maple-blazed hills and amber fields.

Anne sees life through rose-tinted glasses, turning every mundane moment into adventure. Whether she’s collecting wildflowers on a crisp afternoon or inventing poetic names for clouds overhead, she teaches me to look for beauty in the everyday. She doesn’t just live life...she romanticises it. This is still a goal of mine; I'm getting better but I've got more work to do. I think autumn will help...

This season, I’m taking notes. I’m picking up all the new autumn books (sprayed edges and all), lighting fairy lights early, and chasing whimsy like Anne chases sunbeams.

The story reminds me that autumn is a season of transformation, just like Anne’s own growth, and I can’t wait to make my days at home feel more literary, more cosy, and more magical. Let’s dive into how we can all embrace the cosy season, Anne Shirley–style.

Living in a Daydream: Anne’s Whimsical World

Let Your Imagination Run Wild (Like Anne Would!)

Anne of Green Gables has the kind of imagination that turns raindrops into diamonds and a simple bark tree into an enchanted tower. Whenever I feel bored, I channel Anne and start jotting down ideas for stories. In autumn especially, I love to walk through auburn leaves: crunchy and my goodness the smell of damp earth awakens my soul each year. Anne reminds me that creativity isn’t just for artists, it’s a way of seeing. I've always dreamt of writing a book, but to do that, you have to really let your imagination run wild, so I soo want to practise this mindful creativity more.

A Love Letter to Leaves, Sky, and Open Fields

Anne treats Green Gables’ landscape like an old friend, and I totally vibe with that. In autumn, I try to do the same...wandering through woods, admiring russet hues, and gathering acorns and pinecones like nature’s confetti. I love nothing more than crafting autumn wreaths and bouquets. Anne’s deep love for nature helps me fall more in love with the season. I find myself stopping to watch sunsets, tracing leaf veins, and breathing in that crisp air, feeling more alive and more like Anne every step of the way.

Kindred Spirits and Found Families

Besties Forever: Anne and Diana’s Cosy Bond

Anne and Diana’s friendship is the stuff of literary legend. Their bond, full of laughter, shared dreams, and the occasional mix-up, is what autumn best friends’ goals are made of. As an autumn book girlie, I’m inspired to host cosy outdoor tea parties, exchange scarves, and simply be there for each other the way Anne and Diana always are. I am so thankful for my online book girlies that I have found within the community. We all live for pumpkins and cosy small town romance and they are indeed, my kindred spirits.

Home is Where the Heart (and Cuthberts) Are

Marilla may be strict, and Matthew shy, but both shape Anne’s life with gentle love. Their warmth anchors her. This autumn, I want to cultivate that same love at home, baking with my family, sharing moments of stillness, encouraging imagination. You can't beat a cold morning of sipping coffee while your cinnamon buns bake in the oven, smooth autumn jazz oozing out of the Alexa and your knew pumpkin pjs working overtime.

Little Joys and Big Magic: Everyday Cosiness

Anne can find joy in the simplest things: a sunset, a snug scarf, or a visit to the orchard. I’m learning that contentment comes from noticing small delights...like reading by lamplight or savouring a slice of spiced apple pie. It’s these tiny moments of joy that make autumn feel whole. Autumn colouring is really helping me to be mindful and I like to needle felt pumpkins with my mum to really get my craft on.

Storytime Dreams by Candlelight

Anne spends autumn evenings dreaming and reading by the fireplace, and I’ll be doing the same. With books at my side and a mug in hand, I’ll follow Anne’s lead as days darken early. Those quiet moments of reflection? That’s where the real magic happens.Whether we head off for an autumn camping trip or I curl up in my reading chair, I have promised myself more time for reading GUILT FREE. I don't need to earn it.

Making Autumn Feel Like Avonlea

Turn Your Home into a Cottagecore Daydream

Anne would flit around her home dusting with imagination; I’m dusting with fairy lights. This autumn, I’m filling my space with fleece blankets, candlelight, rustic decor, and shades or oranges and coppers. I’ll string up autumn garlands and settle in with a gentle playlist to bring that Avonlea warmth indoors.

Whimsical Ways to Spend a Golden Afternoon

Here’s what I’ll be doing Anne-style: scenic leaf walks, journaling on crunchy leaves, twirling under the harvest moon, picking apples and making cordial (always wanted to try making an autumn hedgerow cordial), and reading cosy stories. All of those simple pleasures feel like stepping into a dream of golden days and endless wonder and they are free!

A Season of Wonder: Living the Anne of Green Gables Way

Anne Shirley taught me that life is what you make it—full of poetry, friendship, and fearless imagination. This autumn, I’m not just reading Anne of Green Gables, I’m living it in my own small way. I want to be hopeful like Anne, creative in the face of season’s endings, and full of wonder at every golden leaf.

If you’re an autumn book girlie too, let’s bring Anne’s world into our own through cosy rituals, gratitude, and playful spirit. Fall is fleeting, but when you live it like Anne, every leaf drop is a little piece of magic. Grab your latest sprayed-edge read, brew something spiced and cosy, and let’s chase that Anne-style autumn together. 🍂✨📚
